The Parent Information Center is excited to partner with the NH Department of Education, Bureau of Special Education Supports to create this series of modules to help families and caregivers partner more effectively with their child’s school to support reading and literacy development. Check out the modules below to learn more about what research tells us about children’s literacy development, NH’s approach to supporting literacy, and what parents and caregivers can do to support their child’s literacy development. The modules can be watched in the order they are posted, or you can check out the topic(s) that interest you the most.
Why Focus on Literacy?
In this module you will learn why literacy skill development is important, what NH is doing to support literacy skill development and the data about literacy development that is available to NH families.

Take a deeper dive into your child’s NH Statewide Assessment System (NHSAS) data by learning how to read and use it to address concerns you may have about your child’s literacy skill development.


What We Know About Teaching Literacy Skills
In this module you will learn about what research tell us about how children develop and learn literacy skills, including the most effective way to teach reading. We will also share questions to ask your child’s school to learn more about how they are teaching reading and other literacy skills.
The Essential Literacy Building Skills
This module will outline the 6 essential literacy building skills, help you identify what skill(s) your child may struggle with and help you to address your concerns with your child’s teacher or school.
